Broadening Insight into the FPSO Business Through Operational Support

Gustavo Alvarez joined Altera Infrastructure in 2023 as a Mechanical Package Engineer and is based in the Trondheim office, where he works closely with the engineering team.

As a Mechanical Package Engineer, my responsibilities involve a hands-on approach with various suppliers of rotating and static equipment, ensuring that fabrication, testing, and delivery are completed in line with Altera’s high standards.

Since starting with the company, my experience has been extremely good and the people have been welcoming and open. A typical day in my role involves outlining the main tasks aligned with the project’s schedule, in collaboration with the engineering team. My primary responsibility is to monitor and follow up engineering activities from start to finish. This includes conducting technical evaluations of suppliers, analysing the efficiency of mechanical equipment, reviewing documentation, witnessing equipment testing, and ensuring that all phases of delivery comply with relevant standards. I believe that the most interesting part of what I do is that every day you can learn something new, and the people and social aspect of the company is an exciting and vital part of the day.

“I particularly value how open the company is to new ideas and continuous improvement in our work processes.”

The vision of leading the industry towards a sustainable future, combined with the diverse backgrounds of the people working here, makes Altera an attractive place to be a part of. I particularly value how open the company is to new ideas and continuous improvement in our work processes.

The best part of my role is the daily interactions with colleagues in different scenarios, learning from them both professionally and personally. My role at Altera has helped me to grow as a person, since moving to Trondheim with my family was challenging but very rewarding at the same time. On the professional side, working more towards operational support has given me a wider overview and experience of the FPSO business. This new chapter has opened my knowledge in a tremendous way since I started at Altera.

Keith Steele

Keith Steele joined Altera Infrastructure in July 2024 as a P&O Advisor in the Aberdeen office. He is responsible for supporting the crew of the Petrojarl Knarr FPSO including through training and logistics, as well as being a contact point for them.

The best part of my role is the people. I really enjoy working with the onshore team as well as the crew, supporting them in every way I can, and I am looking forward to seeing the team grow.  For me, it is a pleasure to get an input to frame what the crew on Rosebank will look like, and it is so important to me that we get it right. I always feel great pride when we bring someone into the team and they settle in well.

There is a really positive environment at Altera. We are looking at a developing time for the company, the Rosebank project is extremely exciting, and I believe that working on the Petrojarl Knarr FPSO is the place to be, she is becoming an integral part of the business.

One of the things I have learned at Altera is that you shouldn’t take mistakes too hard, and focusing on learning from these mistakes is important so they can be prevented in future.  As a young person, new to the industry, working at Altera has allowed me to learn to adapt quickly and think on my feet.

There are so many opportunities at Altera, you can develop yourself, grow, and even transition between onshore and offshore roles. Additionally, you will be working with a great team of people. At Altera you are a master of your own destiny. It’s busy but it is a nice busy, you feel like you have time to do your job and do it well. For anyone considering joining our team I would say give it a go, you can make a real success of yourself at Altera.

No Two Days Are the Same: Kaja Mehl’s Evolving Role as Renewal & Life Extension Manager

Kaja Mehl joined Altera Infrastructure in November 2017, formerly part of Teekay and is based in the Trondheim office. She currently works as Renewal & Life Extension (RLE) Manager, and her position in the base organisation is Senior Mechanical Engineer.

As RLE Manager, my responsibility is to ensure that our FPSO assets are prepared for long-term operations. This includes following up technical, commercial and cost aspects related to life extension scope, ensuring that planning, procurement and execution are carried out in line with quality and budget expectations.

“What I appreciate most about working at Altera is the ownership and dedication I see in my colleagues. There is a strong commitment to delivering safe and high-quality solutions, and a culture that encourages responsibility and engagement.”

Before taking on my current role full time, I supported Operations as a Mechanical Engineer, working mainly with operational support as part of the topside groups, in addition to supporting projects with scope development within Engineering.

No two days are the same, as projects are constantly developing and require focus across different stages, such as scope development, cost estimation, execution, vendor follow-up and budget control. My role involves close collaboration across locations and disciplines, and I travel regularly to follow up activities, meet teams and ensure progress.

What I find most interesting is having the bigger overview of how all parts of a project interact. Working between departments, companies, people and disciplines, and seeing how decisions in one area impact others, has been both challenging and very rewarding. Following a scope from concept through engineering and execution has given valuable insight.

What I appreciate most about working at Altera is the ownership and dedication I see in my colleagues. There is a strong commitment to delivering safe and high-quality solutions, and a culture that encourages responsibility and engagement. Altera also gives people the opportunity to try new things and develop both themselves and the company in new directions.

The people are truly Altera’s greatest asset and form the foundation of the company culture. After several years of commuting for projects, I can honestly say it feels like being part of the Altera family. I would say that the best part of my role is working with the RLE team, which delivers at an impressive level of detail and commitment.

My time at Altera has shown me what I am capable of, both personally and professionally. Being challenged on many levels has pushed me far and given me a deeper understanding of how much you can achieve in a demanding work environment while still maintaining balance.
